Before It Closes

“Two minutes. Don’t move.”

At the Larkspur Palm House, a flower opens for one night. Curator Theo Marsh steps away. Later, he is found dead at the boiler-room steps.

The inspector will release the scene at five. Compare the police file with records held by Theo’s oldest friend and show him what doesn’t add up.

Written to be read.
Built to be solved.

Case & Candle makes online detective games for adults who love a good crime novel. Each case is an authored story told through the records it leaves behind, with one true solution and every clue in the file.

Settle into a well-made mystery, follow the records and enjoy the quiet pleasure of working it out.

  1. Evidence that reads like life.

A club safety sheet. A door-system log. A message sent at 20:52. The records a real inquiry would gather, never riddles for their own sake.

  2. Fair play, start to finish.

Every clue you need is in the file, and every conclusion can be checked against it. No luck and no trick questions.

  3. An ending you earn.

Make your accusation when you are ready. In the longer cases, the ending you read depends on what you can prove.

Question the story.

Someone’s locked the door. Mara wants Eli to come quietly. And she doesn’t want her husband to find her.

A message tells you what someone said. The rest of the evidence helps you decide what to believe.

How the games work.

A solo detective game or a mystery for two: examine records, compare accounts and build your case. Share a screen with a friend, or follow your own train of thought.

How the investigation works
  1. Open the file.

Meet the people. Read the messages and accounts. Notice the detail that doesn’t quite fit.

  2. Question the story.

Compare records, piece together what happened and test your explanation. Disagreement is part of the evening.

  3. Make your case.

Choose the conclusion the evidence supports. A hint is there if you need a fresh way in.

One reader, or two at one screen.

Every case works both ways. Read alone, or compare theories with someone beside you.

A few practical details.

All playing information
What is an online detective game?

A mystery you solve in your browser. You read the case file (messages, statements, documents and photographs), compare the accounts, follow leads and make an accusation. Every Case & Candle case is an authored story with one true solution.

How is this different from a boxed murder mystery kit?

Nothing arrives in the post, and there is nothing to print, set up or tidy away. You still get a full case file to examine, with a notebook, record comparison and optional hints, for less than most boxed kits cost before postage.

Is The Shortest Day really free?

Yes. All four acts, every hint and the complete ending are free. Enter your email to open the case; no payment details or account are needed.

Can I play solo, or with someone else?

Both. One player sees every record and can reach the ending alone. Two people can share one screen, compare theories and decide together. The games do not offer remote multiplayer or synced screens.

What if we get stuck or need a break?

Optional hints offer a direction when you need one. There is no enforced countdown. Progress saves in the same browser when storage is available; it does not sync to another device.

How much is a case, and how long does access last?

The Shortest Day is free. When You Hear My Voice and Everything Went to Plan each cost £9.99 / US$14.99, with 12 months’ access and a 14-day refund promise. Before It Closes is also £9.99 / US$14.99, with the same access and refund terms.

Do I need to print anything or install an app?

No. Play in your browser on a phone, tablet or laptop. A larger screen can be easier to share. No costumes or host are needed.
